Well-being starts with emotional health

Emotional health is an important part of overall health. People who are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. They are able to cope with life’s challenges. They can keep problems in perspective and bounce back from setbacks.

Being emotionally healthy does not mean you are happy all the time. It means you are aware of your emotions. You can deal with them, whether they are positive or negative. Emotionally healthy people still experience stress, anger, and sadness. The important thing is that they know how to manage their negative feelings. They can tell when a problem is more than they can handle on their own and they know how to seek external help.

Thankfully, emotional health is a skill that can be learned and there are key steps you can take to improve your overall emotional health:

  • Be aware of your emotions and reactions: Observe what in your life makes you sad, frustrated, or angry. Try to manage or change those things.
  • Express your feelings appropriately: Let your loved ones and friends know when something is bothering you. Suppressing feelings of sadness or anger adds to stress and can create relationship problems.
  • Think before you respond: Emotions can be powerful. Give yourself time to reflect before you say or do something you might regret later. Compose yourself. Stay calm.
  • Manage stress: Try to identify situations which cause you stress. Learn stress relief methods to cope with stress. Try yoga, deep breathing, meditation, and exercise.
  • Strive for balance: Find a healthy balance between work and play and between activity and rest. Make time for things you enjoy. Focus on positive things in your life.
  • Connect with others: Most of us are social beings. We need social connections with other people. Be proactive and make friends and keep in touch with people.
  • Stay positive: Focus on the good things that happened in your life. Spend time with healthy, positive people. Stay away from toxic people.

Remember that emotional health is an important part of your life. It allows you to realize your full potential in life. Research shows a link between a positive mental state and good physical health.
